How Long Does It Take to Drive from Vienna to Salzburg?
Salzburg is one of the most popular day trips from Vienna, and the drive is long enough that your departure time and stops decide how the day feels. Here is how long it actually takes, what affects it, and how to plan around it.
How long is the drive from Vienna to Salzburg?
About 3 hours. The route is roughly 296 km, which operators estimate at around 3 hours by private car. Light morning traffic can bring it down to about 2 hours 45 minutes. Rush hour, holiday weekends and winter weather can push it past 3.5 hours.
At a glance
Distance: about 296 km
Main road: A1 West Autobahn (E60)
Typical time: about 3 hours
Toll: Austrian motorway vignette required
By train: about 2 h 20 min from Wien Hbf to Salzburg Hbf
What does the route look like?
From Vienna you take the A1 West Autobahn through Lower Austria, past St. Pölten and the exit for Melk, then into Upper Austria near Linz and Wels. After the Mondsee area, the motorway reaches Salzburg. It is wide, well maintained and mostly flat to gently rolling, with no mountain passes. The limit is 130 km/h on most sections, with lower limits in roadworks and variable-limit zones.
What changes the drive time?
Situation | Typical time |
Early morning, light traffic | ~2 h 45 min |
Normal daytime | ~3 h |
Rush hour, summer or holiday weekend, snow | 3 h 30 min or more |
Normal drive plus one 20-30 min break | ~3 h 20 - 3 h 30 |
The biggest factors are:
Leaving Vienna after about 8:00 am, when morning traffic builds on the western exits.
Peak days. Friday and Sunday traffic grows around Linz and Salzburg in summer and on holiday weekends.
Winter weather. The A1 is cleared quickly, but snow slows the whole flow of traffic.
Roadworks. Check live traffic on the morning you travel.
Do you need a vignette?
Yes. Austrian motorways are tolled through a vignette, and driving without one risks heavy penalty tolls. For one trip, the digital 1-day or 10-day vignette is simplest. In 2026 they cost €9.60 and €12.80, and both are valid immediately after online purchase, unlike 2-month and annual vignettes, which only start on the 18th day.
Austria is replacing the adhesive vignette with a digital-only system, and prices change each vignette year, so confirm current rules and prices on the official ASFINAG shop. If you rent a car, ask whether a valid vignette is include
Which stops are worth making?
Melk Abbey, about an hour from Vienna and a short detour from the A1. If the Wachau Valley interests you as much as Salzburg, read our guide to visiting the Wachau Valley from Vienna without a car.
Linz, about 2 hours 10 minutes from Vienna and roughly two-thirds of the way, with plenty of food and fuel options.
Mondsee, a short detour late in the drive, known for its lakeside church.
Each stop adds one to three hours, so for a one-day trip it is usually better to skip them on the way out and add one on the way back.
What does a realistic day trip look like?
Leave Vienna between 7:00 and 8:00 am and you arrive around 10:30 or 11:00, with four to five hours in the city. Salzburg's UNESCO-listed Old Town, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart's birthplace and Mirabell Palace are all walkable from one another. Start back by 4:00 to 5:00 pm to stay ahead of evening traffic near Linz and Salzburg. Expect more than four hours of travel in total, so it is a full day, not a casual outing. Should you drive yourself or book a private transfer?
The road time is the same either way. What differs is who handles navigation, the vignette, fuel or charging, and parking.
Self-drive or rental car gives full control over stops, but you also manage parking. Much of the Old Town is pedestrian-focused, so you will park in a garage and walk.
A private chauffeur transfer is door to door: hotel pickup in Vienna, a professional driver, luggage assistance and drop-off at your hotel or near the Old Town in Salzburg. It suits families, groups and anyone arriving with luggage. Is the train faster than driving?
Slightly. Salzburg has a direct train from Wien Hbf to Salzburg Hbf. Without delays it takes around 2 hours 20 minutes, so it beats the car for solo travelers. A car or private transfer works better with luggage, children, a group, or when you want to stop on the way. Check current timetables with ÖBB before you book. blacklane
