How to Get from Vienna to Graz by Car

The fastest road from Vienna to Graz is the A2 motorway. The drive is about 190 to 200 km and takes roughly 2 hours 15 minutes in normal traffic. You can drive yourself with a valid Austrian vignette (€9.60 for one day or €12.80 for ten days in 2026). You can also book a private chauffeur transfer from €390 per vehicle with tolls and fuel included.

Figures are planning estimates. Your distance and time change with your exact addresses and traffic and roadworks.

Which route should you take: A2 or S6/S35?

Both routes leave Vienna on the A2 and run south past Wiener Neustadt to Knoten Seebenstein. That is where they split.

A2 across the Wechsel area (the standard route). Stay on the A2 over the Lower Austria and Styria border and on to Graz. Three exits matter: Knoten Graz Ost (A2 km 179) and the Flughafen Graz exit (km 183) and Knoten Graz West (km 185 where the A9 begins). Austrian university and tourism directions for Graz send drivers from Vienna this way.

S6 over the Semmering then the S35 (the alternative). At Seebenstein take the S6 over the Semmering to Bruck an der Mur. Then take the S35 towards Graz. You reach Graz from the north rather than the east.

Instead of “check both in your app” use these rules:

Situation

Better choice

Why

Normal traffic and a destination in the east or centre or south of Graz or at Graz Airport

A2

One continuous motorway ending at the Graz Ost or airport exits

A crash or closure or roadworks on the A2

S6 then S35

During A2 night closures near Laßnitzhöhe in September 2026 ÖAMTC diverted through traffic via the S6 and S35 and A9

A destination north of Graz or in the Mur and Mürz valleys

S6/S35

You leave the S35 at the exit nearest your destination instead of crossing Graz

Heavy rain or fog or snow

Decide on live conditions

Both routes cross hills so check ASFINAG webcams and traffic news before you choose

No official time difference between the two routes is published. Test both with live navigation before you commit. Our chauffeurs cover both routes and pick the better one for each booking using live traffic and your pickup and drop off addresses.

How long does the drive take and how far is it?

Allow about 2 hours 15 minutes for a typical journey from central Vienna to central Graz. The distance changes because Vienna and Graz are large cities with many possible start and end points.

The figure covers driving only. Add time for a rest stop and fuel and the last stretch through Graz. Traffic is heaviest at weekends at the start and end of school holidays in eastern Austria. ÖAMTC and ARBÖ publish congestion forecasts for those dates.

From Vienna International Airport (VIE) in Schwechat you join the route without going into central Vienna first. Ask for an estimate for your exact airport and Graz address because the city figure uses a different starting point.

How our chauffeurs plan a Vienna to Graz run

We plan every Vienna to Graz transfer around your arrival time and not around the average drive time. For an appointment in Graz we ask when you need to be at reception and add a traffic margin beyond the 2 hour 15 minute estimate. For an airport pickup we track your flight and adjust the collection if it lands early or late. Our chauffeurs cover both the A2 and the S6/S35 routes so a closure or a crash does not change your arrival plan.

Planned comfort stops for a toilet or feeding or stretching break are included on longer journeys. Mention them when you book so the timing allows for them. Whatever way you travel leave a margin beyond the estimated drive for any fixed appointment.

Do you need a vignette and what does it cost?

Yes. Cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes need a valid vignette on the A2 and S6 and S35. These are the ASFINAG 2026 tariffs for cars:

Vignette

Price

1 day (digital only)

€9.60

10 days

€12.80

2 months

€32.00

Year

€106.80

Five points that save money or trouble:

  1. For a round trip on different days buy the 10 day vignette. Two one day vignettes cost €19.20. One ten day vignette costs €12.80 and covers both journeys.
  2. One day and ten day digital vignettes are valid immediately after an online purchase. The two month and annual vignettes carry an 18 day waiting period for consumers who buy online.
  3. The sticker is ending. 2026 is the last year of the windscreen sticker. The 2026 sticker stays valid until 31 January 2027. From 1 February 2027 only the digital vignette exists and it is linked to your number plate. Check the plate when you buy.
  4. Buy from ASFINAG or an authorised partner such as ADAC or Autopay or Tolltickets. ASFINAG warns that other websites add fees.
  5. Tariffs are indexed every year (the 2026 rise was 2.9%). Reports in October 2026 put the 2027 annual vignette at about €109 and say that buying it before the end of December may keep the 2026 price of €106.80. ASFINAG had not yet published the 2027 short term tariffs when we checked so confirm at shop.asfinag.at before you travel from December 2026.

Driving without a valid vignette leads to a substitute toll of €200 for cars since January 2026 against €120 before. Pay it on the spot to avoid an administrative penalty procedure. If you rent a car ask the rental company whether a vignette is already on the vehicle.

Extra tolls. The A2 and S6 and S35 have no separate section toll. The A9 Pyhrn Autobahn does at the Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnels. If your navigation sends you through the Gleinalm tunnel check the extra charge first.

On a private transfer the chauffeur handles all road charges. The transfer fare includes tolls and fuel.

What does the drive cost in fuel?

The formula: (distance in km × litres per 100 km ÷ 100) × price per litre.

With the E Control national median prices of 18 October 2026 (Super 95 at €1.779 per litre and diesel at €2.096 per litre) a 200 km trip costs:

Consumption

Petrol

Diesel

6 L/100 km

€21.35

€25.15

7 L/100 km

€24.91

€29.34

8 L/100 km

€28.46

€33.54

Example one way budget (200 km at 7 L/100 km with a one day vignette): €34.51 for a petrol car and €38.94 for a diesel car before parking. Subtract €9.60 if you already hold a valid vignette.

Why your number may differ in 2026. Austrian fuel prices have swung widely this year. E Control data reported in September 2026 put the national diesel average at €2.239 against €2.096 on 18 October. On a 14 litre trip that gap is about €2. Parliament also voted in late September 2026 for a fuel price brake that cuts mineral oil tax by 6.7 cents per litre for October and November. Do not assume October prices still apply in December. Check the E Control fuel price calculator on the day you leave.

Winter tyres

From 1 November to 15 April a car in Austria must have winter tyres on all wheels whenever winter road conditions apply such as snow or slush or ice. Check the Austrian government guidance and the forecast for the Wechsel and Semmering hills before you set off.

Parking in Graz

Choose your parking zone before you enter Graz because the zone sets how long you can stay.

If you stay in the Graz Altstadt compare your hotel parking with a garage daily maximum and its vehicle height limit before you book. On a chauffeur transfer your driver handles the parking arrangements and drops you at the address you booked.

Driving an electric car on this route

One way is within range of many electric cars in mild weather. Winter cold and a steady 130 km/h reduce range so plan one charge rather than hoping to skip it. ASFINAG service areas on the A2 between Seebenstein and Graz include Loipersdorf (about km 105) and Arnwiesen (about km 154).

Private chauffeur transfer from Vienna to Graz: what you get and what it costs

A private transfer takes you from a Vienna hotel or home or office or Vienna International Airport to your agreed address in Graz in one Mercedes reserved for your party. The fare is per vehicle and starts at €390. The same service runs from Graz back to Vienna city or the airport.

What the fare covers:

What to send when you book: exact addresses and date and time and passenger count and bag sizes and child seat needs. For an airport pickup add your flight number. If a vehicle cannot reach your entrance the chauffeur agrees a suitable drop off point with you beforehand.

Honest cost comparison. Driving yourself costs roughly €35 to €39 one way before parking. A transfer costs many times more so it is a convenience purchase and not a saving. It pays off when you land at the airport with luggage or travel as a family or need to arrive fresh for a meeting.

How to compare transfer quotes. Check whether the price is per vehicle or per seat. Check that tolls and fuel are included. Check the free waiting time and the child seat arrangements and the luggage space. Check the cancellation terms and the exact vehicle you will get. Two quotes with the same headline fare can include very different things.

This guide is published by a company that sells private transfers. We describe the self drive and public transport options in the same detail so you can compare them fairly. See all private transfers across Austria if your plans include other cities.
