Booking about 48 hours ahead usually gets you the best rate and guarantees the vehicle you want. Same day requests are possible too, though they need three or four hours' notice and carry a small premium, since it depends on what's free that day.
What's already included, and what can add to it
Your fixed price covers tolls, taxes and fuel, so there's no toll booth stop or surprise charge waiting at the end.
A few things sit outside that base price. An airport pickup adds a small meet and greet fee to cover parking and the wait in arrivals. A pickup between 11pm and 6am carries a night surcharge, since it's asking more of the driver. If you add a stop along the route, that's billed by the hour. And a child seat, if you need one, is a small add on too, though an infant seat is usually free on request.
Getting across the border in 2026
Austria and Hungary are both part of the Schengen area, so there's no passport booth to queue at under normal circumstances. That said, spot checks do happen, and Austria has extended its border controls with Hungary and three other neighbours by six months, which means checks are expected to continue into March 2027.
Bring a passport or an EU national ID for everyone in the car. If you're travelling from outside the EU, a Schengen visa issued by Austria covers Hungary too, and citizens of countries like the US, Canada, Australia and Japan can enter visa free for up to 90 days in any 180 day period. Austria uses euros and Hungary uses forints, so it helps to have a little local currency ready if you stop for coffee near the border.
Good places to stop along the way

If you have a full day to spare, the Danube Bend and Esztergom, home to Hungary's largest church, make for a longer detour worth planning ahead for.

Travelling with children
Austrian law requires children under 14 and shorter than 135 cm to travel in a proper child restraint. Once a child passes that height, a seatbelt is allowed, though a booster is still recommended up to about 150 cm. Payment and cancelling a booking
